Aurora: A Rainforest and Coastal Retreat
Baler’s surf and Maria Aurora’s great balete tree reveal different sides of the province.
Aurora faces the Pacific, where forested mountains meet a long and varied coastline. In Baler, the sea has helped shape a town now closely associated with surfing, while historic sites recall its earlier chapters.
Sabang Beach is one of Baler’s familiar gathering places. Its broad coastal setting is part of the attraction even for those who come simply to watch the water. Elsewhere in the province, rivers and forested slopes offer a different rhythm.
In Maria Aurora, a large balete tree has become a landmark in its own right. Stories and beliefs associated with balete trees add a layer of folklore, but the tree’s physical presence needs little embellishment. It is another reminder of how nature and local memory meet in Aurora.
