Basilan’s story reaches beyond the headlines that have so often defined it. Along its coast are beaches such as Malamawi, while inland, waterfalls and forested landscapes reveal another side of the island.
Bulingan Falls in Lamitan is one of its distinctive natural landmarks. Water runs over a broad wall of rock into a pool below, framed by tropical greenery. The scene belongs to a wider landscape of farms, settlements and waterways that sustain everyday life.
Lamitan also offers an introduction to local heritage through its museum and the Lami-Lamihan festival. Taken together, these places invite a more attentive view of Basilan: an island of living communities, traditions and landscapes, rather than a single, simplified story.
