Eastern Samar: History along the Pacific Coast

Homonhon and Guiuan connect the province’s coastal setting with important historical events.

Eastern Samar’s coastline is closely connected with the history of contact and travel in the Philippines. Homonhon is remembered as the island where the Magellan expedition landed in 1521, while Guiuan carries traces of a later wartime chapter.

The church in Guiuan is another important heritage landmark. Like the province’s historical markers, it offers a way to look beyond the shoreline and consider the communities and events associated with these places.

Natural scenery and folklore add different layers. Beaches along the Pacific coast reveal the province’s open-water setting, while stories surrounding Hamorawon Spring in Borongan belong to local tradition. Taken together, history, landscape and storytelling make Eastern Samar more than a collection of scenic stops: they give those places context and memory.
