Samar: Into a Limestone Landscape
Sohoton’s caves and natural bridge reveal a dramatic side of the island’s interior.
The province of Samar, historically also known as Western Samar, offers a landscape of rivers, limestone formations and forest. Its interior provides a different experience from the familiar coastal views of the island.
Sohoton in Basey is among the best-known places to encounter that scenery. Caves, steep rock faces and a natural bridge form part of a river landscape that makes the geology visible at close range. Lulugayan Falls in Calbiga offers another expression of moving water within the province.
San Juanico Bridge connects Samar with Leyte and remains one of the region’s familiar landmarks. Beyond that crossing, the province rewards a slower exploration of its towns and natural environments, where the relationship between water and rock is often central to the view.
