Lanao del Sur: The Splendor of Maranao Heritage
Around Lake Lanao, architecture, carving and collections preserve a rich cultural vocabulary.
Lake Lanao lies at the heart of Lanao del Sur’s landscape and Maranao heritage. Its waters and surrounding communities provide a setting for traditions expressed in architecture, music, textiles and decorative art.
The torogan, a traditional residence associated with Maranao leadership, is among the region’s most recognizable architectural forms. Carved wooden elements carry flowing okir designs. The Kawayan Torogan in Marantao was declared a National Cultural Treasure by the National Museum in 2008, recognizing the importance of this surviving example.
Collections such as those associated with the Aga Khan Museum in Marawi offer another entry into this cultural history. A visit to the region is most meaningful when buildings and objects are understood alongside the people who continue to give them meaning.
