Paoay’s church and the province’s coastal landscapes offer a layered introduction to the north.
Ilocos Norte rewards a journey that makes room for both architecture and landscape. Old churches and civic landmarks sit within a province of agricultural plains, coastal towns and mountain scenery.
Paoay Church is among its most distinctive heritage sites. Its broad buttresses and imposing silhouette form part of the Baroque Churches of the Philippines UNESCO World Heritage property. The building is a reminder of how church architecture was adapted to local conditions and materials.
Farther north, Pagudpud’s coast and waterfalls offer a change of setting. These natural places complement, rather than replace, the province’s historical attractions. Moving between them makes it possible to see Ilocos Norte as a region with many layers of memory, work and everyday life.
