Ilocos Sur: A Glimpse of the Past
Vigan’s streets and Santa Maria’s church preserve different chapters of a shared heritage.
Ilocos Sur is well known for Vigan, where streets, houses and public spaces retain a distinctive historic character. Calle Crisologo has become an emblem of that heritage, but the city is more than a single street arranged for a photograph.
UNESCO recognizes the Historic City of Vigan for its surviving urban fabric and the meeting of cultural influences expressed in its architecture. Museums, plazas and old homes provide different ways to read the city’s past while its streets remain part of a living community.
Elsewhere in the province, Santa Maria Church belongs to the UNESCO-listed Baroque Churches of the Philippines. Together, the city and the church demonstrate that Ilocos Sur’s heritage is not confined to one style or landmark, but is spread across a wider landscape.
