Misamis Occidental: A Fort, a Coast and Local Memory
Ozamiz’s Cotta and Tangub’s festive traditions offer contrasting ways to encounter the province.
Misamis Occidental’s coastal towns preserve traces of different historical periods. In Ozamiz, the Fuerte de la Concepción y del Triunfo, commonly called the Cotta, is one of the province’s most recognizable built landmarks.
Its walls and waterside setting connect the city with a longer history of defense, trade and religious life. The site remains part of a living urban landscape, where heritage and daily activity occupy the same space.
In Tangub, Christmas displays have become another familiar expression of local identity. Their seasonal brightness offers a contrast with the old stone of the Cotta, but both reveal ways communities give meaning to public places. Together with the province’s coast and agricultural interior, they offer several entry points into Misamis Occidental.
