Negros Occidental: The Stories within the Ruins
An old mansion in Talisay provides a striking entry into the province’s built heritage.
The Ruins in Talisay is one of Negros Occidental’s most recognizable landmarks. The remains of the mansion are associated with the family of Don Mariano Ledesma Lacson and the province’s sugar-era history.
Its exposed structure gives visitors a view of a building shaped as much by loss as by its original design. Arches, columns and open rooms invite attention to the lives and economic world that once surrounded the house, rather than simply its appeal as a photographic backdrop.
The province’s wider landscape includes agricultural areas, towns and the mountain setting of Kanlaon. Together with Bacolod’s familiar urban life, these places offer contrasting ways to understand Negros Occidental. The Ruins is one compelling doorway into that history, but it is not the whole story.
