Zambales: A Landscape Remade by Pinatubo
Mountain scenery and a long coastline tell a story of change and continuity.
The 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo transformed landscapes and communities across Central Luzon. In Zambales and neighboring provinces, its effects remain part of the region’s physical landscape and living memory.
The crater lake has become one of the volcano’s most recognizable images. Its quiet appearance should not obscure Pinatubo’s classification as an active volcano, or the importance of current conditions and local access arrangements for any journey in the area.
Zambales also stretches along a long western coastline, with beaches, fishing communities and the waters of Subic Bay offering another view of the province. Its story includes both dramatic geological change and the continuing lives of communities along the coast and in the mountains.
